Womens Vitamin
The risk of rectal cancer, especially in older women, may be linked to a low intake of vitamin E, according to a report published in the American Journal of Epidemiology (2004;159:32-41). Antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin E are believe to neutralize free radicals in the digestive tract and prevent cellular damage. Women showed the largest association between antioxidants and rectal cancer risk. Women with the lowest vitamin E levels were found to be more than twice as likely to have rectal cancer than women with the highest levels. Women with the lowest intakes of lycopene, and antioxidant carotenoid, were also found to be 70 percent more likely to have rectal cancer.
Although Tanzanias standard of care recommends that children receive a dose of vitamin A every six months, trial results showed that maternal vitamin A supplementation increased HIV transmission to children. The studys data and safety monitoring board recommended that vitamin A be discontinued from the trial regimen in September 2000. The researchers note in their article, Among HIV-infected US men, the relationship between vitamin A intake and HIV disease progression and mortality was U-shaped, suggesting that both low and high levels of intake are potentially harmful. The group that received multivitamins had higher CD4+ levels and significantly lower viral loads than those on placebo. (Vitamin A combined with the multivitamin was less effective.) Women taking the multivitamin had less fatigue, fewer acute upper respiratory tract infections, fewer rashes, and fewer oral and gastrointestinal problems associated with HIV/AIDS. These women were also less likely to reach WHO stage 4 or die of AIDS-related illness than those taking a placebo. I wonder if the inclusion of minerals known to support the immune system (i.e., selenium, zinc) in the multivitamin formula would increase this benefit. Retail prices for a years supply of the multivitamins used in the trial average about $15 per person. Fawzi WW, Msamanga GI, Spiegelman D et al. Negotiating The Fraud Exclusion It is important for policyholders to understand, however, that the exact wording of the exclusion can differ substantially from policy to policy. This can have important practical ramifications for directors and officers. For example, in some instances, the terms of the exclusion may allow an insurance company to refuse to provide a director or officer with a defense to a claim in a lawsuit asserting fraud; the director or officer therefore will be obligated to retain and pay for his or her own attorney. In other situations, the exclusion only may prohibit an insurance company from indemnifying a director or officer once fraud has been proven in the underlying lawsuit; the director or officer is much more likely to avoid having to pay any costs out-of-pocket with this form of the exclusion.

Over the years the concept of medical necessity has evolved to encompass a multitude of medical management strategies. Essentially, in terms of the contract language, medical necessity has become a workhorse concept to determine coverage eligibility. In the process, the interpretation of the term has taken on various guises and a variety of processes have been used to define medical necessity. The following discussion highlights the variable uses of the concept of medical necessity. 1. Determining the most appropriate intensity of service and place of service

Projected sales at Williams Matteson, Illinois, franchise are expected to reach $450,000. Williams has tapped into a bourgeoning $55 billion industry, driven by both the youth market, with its disposable income, and image-conscious baby boomers wanting to keep their look current. The typical African American female gets her hair done weekly, Williams points out. Weekly clients generate a lot of revenue for a hair salon. At Williams location, 97% of the customers are African American. Ultimately, Williams goal is to have three locations; plans are underway to open a second location in Englewood, Illinois, in late fall. Its going to be a challenge because its the first time a Fantastic Sams will open in a Chicago inner city. I really want to give back to the community and help grow the marketplace. I will reevaluate next year, look at the numbers, and determine when its the right time to open a third location. Diversity among Fantastic Sams salon and regional owners is a priority for the company. Scott L. Colabuono, president and CEO of Fantastic Sams International, explains, Our [customers] represent a broad slice of the U.S. population; they are looking for quality hair cuts; coloring and styling services; a convenient location; a personable, certified stylist trained in both basic and trendy hair styles at a value-oriented price. Our diverse ownership group is driven to exceed clients expectations.

This fall, as part of the landscaping improvements for the library grounds, there will be a new Reading Garden near the front entrance. Purchase an engraved brick for the Reading Garden and your name can join those of friends, neighbors, local organizations and businesses to show support for the library and the services it provides to the community. An engraved brick is a unique, one-of-a-kind gift for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries or graduations. Park Ridge (IL) Public Library, Summer 2006
BrickFor the above-cited practical reasons and because it is also an aesthetically pleasing medium, brick has been used as a building material for at least 5,000 years. The first brick was probably made in the Middle East, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what is now Iraq. Lacking the stone their contemporaries in other regions used for permanent structures, early builders here relied on the abundant natural materials to make their sun-baked bricks. These, however, were of limited use because they lacked durability and could not be used outdoors; exposure to the elements caused them to disintegrate. The Babylonians, who later dominated Mesopotamia, were the first to fire bricks, from which many of their tower-temples were constructed.

Mens Leather Vests
For inspiration, dig out some old soft-rock compilation albums (the ones called things like “Precious Metal” or “Leather and Lace”), squeeze into some customised leather trousers, slash the arms off a perfectly good black T-shirt, apply copious amounts of kohl and then follow these instructions. One: take a chunk of well-highlighted fringe and backcomb furiously (rock chicks arent scared of split ends). Two: spray liberally with industrial- strength Elnett. Repeat the process. Three: pull the rest of your hair into a ponytail, fasten the quiff in place with a couple of Kirbigrips and pull out a few strands to ensure the wanton woman effect. There are numerous pitfalls to be avoided. Most importantly, make sure your quiff isnt too sleek - Mark Lamarr connotations make any flirtation with Brylcreem a foregone fashion faux pas (even he saw the light and shaved his off). Youll also need to avoid the 1980s quiff, which was steeled with enough lumpy gel to ensure even the briskest wind wouldnt disturb its vertiginous glory. Favoured by pop stars with regal pretensions (King, Prince), and those with more humble beginnings (Morrissey, the Stray Cats), the quiff reigned supreme until the baseball cap put a downer on all that backcombing. Still, two decades as a style pariah is enough - its time to make friends with your comb again.

HGH Therapy
Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.
Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.
“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.

The warm-blooded flipside to Olivier Assayass Demonlover (2002), Clean is similarly concerned with internationally disseminated media product, here pop music, with all its damning and redemptive qualities. Maggie Cheung is Emily Wang, a junkie-in-recovery vilified by the music press for the textbook O.D. death of her washed-up rockstar boyfriend; she retreats to Paris in hopes of getting straight and earning back her son from his guardian grandfather (Nick Nolte, in a wonderfully shy, creaky performance). Buoyed by fuzzy, weightless Brian Eno synths, Clean is simply as emotionally luminous an experience as the movies can offer.

Pest Control
Its been a long rime since I have reviewed gopher control in the vineyard. Its appropriate, given the time of year, so I thought we would take a look at it this month. All three rodents damage vines by chewing on them. New plantings and established vines are susceptible to both root damage and girdling. In addition to plant damage, these rodents will also move enough dirt to redirect water away from vines and literally into a hole in the ground. Ground squirrels specifically will chew drip lines and damage emitters. I have observed squirrels chewing things for no other reason than the fact that they are there. Control of these pests is broken into three fairly broad categories: biological, chemical and trapping.
Pest controllers locate, identify, repel, and destroy pests. They use their knowledge of pests habits, along with an arsenal of pest management techniques-applying chemicals, setting traps, operating equipment, and even modifying building structures-to alleviate pest problems. The best known method of pest control is pesticide application. Pest controllers apply two different types of pesticides: common use and restricted use. Common use pesticides are the most widely used and are readily available; in diluted concentrations, they are available to the public. Restricted use pesticides are available only to professionals for the most severe infestations. Their application is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because of their potential harm to pest controllers, customers, and the environment.

divx videos
“Technology always has unforeseen consequences, and it is not always clear, at the beginning, who or what will win, and who or what will lose.” Divx is in good company. The 20-year history of optical discs includes a wide assortment of moribund formats. Some were brilliant ideas that never caught on, some were turkeys that didnt deserve to, but all were originally cherished by their creators. Many defunct formats, as well, live on under assumed names, their features incorporated into existing viable formats. At one time or another even the most successful optical formats have been dubbed failures, when in truth, their only failure may have been that they didnt succeed in the application or the market niche for which they were created.
Will Divx kill retail video rental specialists? The limited-play feature for movies in the new DVD format, backed by Circuit City, could sway the balance of power in the home entertainment business toward mass merchants and away from video rental specialists, according to Ron Berger, chairman, president and ceo of Rentrak, a firm that leases videocassettes to video rental specialists. He further predicted that if Divx is successful, it would turn the video business into something akin to the hit-driven sell-through video sales situation found today in mass merchants and convenience stores.
DivX Inc (Nasdaq:DIVX), the company which created the DivX video compression technology, announced on Wednesday (10 January) the release of the new software application, DivX Author, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, USA. DivX Author is a key piece of the companys strategy to build a common media language that spans platforms and devices, as interactive DivX files are fully compatible with DivX Ultra Certified DVD players, so users can playback their videos beyond the PC in a real home theatre environment, said the CEO of DivX.

SmokingResearch indicates that tobacco causes more than twenty categories of fatal and disabling diseases, including lung cancer , cardiovascular disease, and respiratory diseases. However, tobacco is very addictive, and the majority of smokers have difficulty quitting even when they have a medical condition. For example, a 2000 study of 15,660 adults by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality found that 38 percent of people with emphysema, 25 percent of people with asthma , 20 percent of people with hypertension and cardiovascular problems, and 19 percent of people with diabetes continue to smoke. Although smoking was responsible for their health conditions, they perceived that, since their health conditions already exist, quitting would not have an affect on their future health and well-being.A recent area of concern related to tobacco use has been nonsmokers exposure to second-hand smoke. Parental smoking has been proven to contribute to increased rates of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in addition to chronic illnesses in children such as asthma, bronchitis, colds, and pneumonia . Pregnant women who chew tobacco, smoke, or are exposed to second-hand smoke have a higher risk of miscarriage and of giving birth to low birth weight babies, who are prone to infection. Women who smoke are more likely to be victims of primary and secondary infertility, to have delays in conceiving, and to have an increased risk of early menopause and low bone density (Current Issues and Forthcoming Events). Most women are unaware of these dangers. Not only can the expectant mother place her unborn fetus in danger, but she can also place herself at risk for future smoking-related diseases and early mortality.
Facts and figures about the global decline in smoking from the U.S. government, international agencies and Worldwatch: (salinity)U.S. cigarette production dropped from 2,810 cigarettes per person annually a decade ago to 1,633 last year. (salinity)World production dropped from its peak of 1,027 per capita in 1990 to a 34-year low of 915 per person last year. (salinity)Smoking has dropped 19 percent in France since peaking in 1985, 8 percent in China since 1990 and 4 percent in Japan since 1992.

Looking at freight transport, there was a significant increase in maritime and railway transport, while the volume of road transport remained roughly at the level from last years second quarter. After the volume of maritime transport fell by a fifth in the first quarter, it rose by 14.5% in the second quarter of 2007, year on year. The volume of transport has become more volatile in recent years, but the volume of goods carried has not contracted significantly relative to the global conjuncture witnessed in the industry in 2005. Maritime transport is one of the minor transport modes in Slovenia. Railway freight transport grew by 14.9% in the first quarter and continued to grow strongly in the second quarter. Harbour transport recorded a modest increase, while road freight transport did not increase in year-on-year terms in the second quarter, partly because of the very high volume of road transport seen in the second quarter of 2006. Data also show that the expansion in this mode of transport, boosted by the abolition of restrictions upon Slovenias accession to the EU, has moderated somewhat this year Slovenia is near the top among EU countries according to the volume of road freight transport per capita. The assessment refers to the volume of freight transport expressed in tonne kilometres, undertaken by freight vehicles registered in a given country. It measures carriage by domestic freight vehicles in the country of registration and abroad, and not the volume of transport within the territory of a given country. In 2006 by far the most per capita road shipments were performed by carriers registered in Luxembourg (18,766 tkm; see graph). Slovenian carriers (with three times lower freight transport per capita) were ranked second and performed 58.9% more transport than the average carrier in the EU. The high intensity of road freight transport in Slovenia is the result of the surging growth rates of road transport, particularly in 2004 and 2005 (27.9% and 22.5%). From the second quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2007, the volume of shipments carried by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia increased by 53.8%. Domestic transport rose by 23.9%, while international transport climbed by as much as 63.8%. Within international transport, the largest (3.2-fold) increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country). The well-developed shipping industry in Slovenia is attributable to Slovenias favourable position at the crossing of European corridors V and X. Transport on these corridors is increasing, and Slovenian carriers are exploiting new business opportunities. With Slovenias entry into the EU, a number of administrative barriers for carriage within the EU were removed for Slovenian carriers (especially the procurement of a limited number of licences). Slovenia also negotiated the possibility to perform cabotage in the EU-15 countries, which the Eastern European countries that joined the EU together with Slovenia will only be allowed to do after the end of a five-year period.
Freight transport saw the volume of road freight transport drop in the third quarter of 2006 after three years of its robust growth. The volume of rail freight transport picked up by 4.2% in Q3, year on year, while the volume of road freight transport fell by 4.3%. International transport performed by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia decreased by just 0.8%, whereas transport within the country recorded a stronger drop of 16.1%. This was the first year-on-year quarterly fall of road freight transport since Q2 of 2003. Q3 of 2006 also witnessed a 10.2% fall in the volume of maritime freight transport. This activity registered the second consecutive year-on-year quarterly decrease, whereas in 2005 it still enjoyed robust growth (41.7%), driven by the boom in the industry. Harbour freight transport surged by 27.6% in Q3 and also recorded a high nine-month year-on-year increase (24.6%). Over the last five years, road freight transport surged by more than 50%, which was almost entirely due to the increase in international transport. In Q3 of 2006 over Q3 of 2001, road freight transport picked up by 56.5% or 1,003 million tonne kilometres (tkm). The shipment of goods out of or into Slovenia rose by 49.1% or 534 million tkm, whereas transport abroad and cabotage (the shipment of goods within another country) shot up 4.3-fold, i.e. by 450 million tkm. Meanwhile, national road freight transport increased by a modest 3.5%, or 19 million tkm. Within the EU, Slovenia is one of the few countries that perform the highest number of per capita road shipments (measured in tkm). The favourable transit position and the countrys smallness (a high share of international trade) underpin Slovenias high proportion of international transport, whose growth has been additionally boosted by the process of Slovenias integration in the EU. The last administrative barriers to carrying out freight transport abroad were removed as Slovenia became a full EU member, which led to the boom in activity seen in recent years.

concrete franchises
Select from franchises that suit your interests and open your dream business today!
FRANCHISINGOver the past few decades, franchising has emerged as an integral part of Americas commercial landscape. Indeed, companies as diverse as McDonalds, The Gap, and Jiffy Lube owe their ubiquitous presence in the marketplace to the practice. Department of Commerce figures indicate that franchises exceeded $300 billion in annual sales in the mid-1990s, and the International Franchising Association (IFA) estimates that within a few short years, 50 percent of all U.S. retail sales will take place in franchise outlets.Franchising has been embraced by many entrepreneurs eager to run their own company. But the characteristics of a franchising business are dissimilar in some crucial respects from those of other start-up businesses. Some businesspeople have even gone so far as to characterize franchisees as glorified employees of the franchisor, the company that owns the trademark and business concept that the franchisees use. Other observers find this description of the relationship to be misleading and simplistic, but they also acknowledge that there are many aspects of franchising that a prospective small business owner should learn about before entering into such an agreement.

By Jim Ramberg Right down to the wire was what it was. Cheryle Sanders was fishing at Perry last week, the finale of the Capital-Journal Fishing contest, casting a jig when something big happened. It turned out to be an 8-pound, 12-ounce walleye, the biggest turned in this season.
At odds with the current despondency surrounding the white fish industry, Highlands CorrespondentAlan Crawford finds signs of hope on the horizon for the communities tied to the sea Out of Aberdeen on the road to Peterhead a thick, salty haar descends upon the countryside, obscuring the boundary between land and sea in this northeast stronghold of Scotlands fishing fleet. But there are signs that the age-old association between the region and its fishing heritage may be adrift. Incomes are falling and recruits to the industry are at such a low level that it is difficult to get crew. After much hand wringing over European Commission cuts imposed in February on the number of days whitefish trawlers can spend at sea, 177 boat owners have applied to decommission their vessels. Last week European fisheries Commissioner Franz Fischler announced his plans for an extension of the cod recovery scheme in the North Sea for up to 10 years, signalling many more years of restrictions on Scottish boats fishing efforts.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

Pregnancy Vitamin
A study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of 100 mg vitamin C per day in preventing PROM. A double blind design was employed. Subjects were pregnant women with no acute or chronic diseases and lt; 20 weeks gestation. The subjects were allocated 1 of 2 groups by a random-number tables. One group received 100 mg vitamin C per day and the other group received a placebo. Women were evaluated according to standardized procedures by trained nutritionists and physicians. From weeks 20 to 36, women were evaluated every 4 weeks. At each evacuation a vaginal exploratory examination was performed and a vaginal swab was taken for Gram staining and microbiologic study. At the end of pregnancy, the incidence of PROM was registered as the primary outcome. A total of 109 subjects completed the study. Mean plasma vitamin C concentrations decreased significantly throughout the pregnancy in both groups (P = 0.001), and there were no significant differences between groups. Between weeks 20 and 36, mean leukocyte vitamin C concentrations decreased from 17.5 micrograms/10s to 15.23 micrograms/10S cells in the supplemented group (within-and between-group differences: P = 0.001). The incidence of PROM was 14 per 57 pregnancies (24.5%) in the placebo group and 4 per 52 pregnancies (7.69%) in the supplemented group (relative risk: 0.26; 95% CI: 0.078, 0.837). Daily supplementation with 100 mg of vitamin C after 20 weeks of gestation appears to effectively reduce the occurrence of PROM.
Researchers in Germany and The Netherlands studied more than 100 women–approximately one-fourth followed a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, 40 percent ate less than 10 ounces of meat per week, and 40 percent ate a standard diet (gt; 10 ounces of meat per week). Vitamin [B.sub.12] intake was lowest in the vegetarians, followed by the low meat-eaters, while the women eating a standard diet had the highest. Approximately 60 percent of the vegetarian women met recommendations for vitamin [B.sub.12] using a combination of dietary sources (mainly milk and dairy products) and supplements, but 40 percent of women had vitamin [B.sub.12] intakes below recommendations. Dietary intake was reflected in blood vitamin [B.sub.12] levels; close to 40 percent of the vegetarian women, 9 percent of the low meat-eaters, and 3 percent of the meat-eaters had low blood vitamin [B.sub.12] levels at some point in their pregnancy. Low blood vitamin [B.sub.12] levels were only found in women who had a vitamin [B.sub.12] intake of less than 4 micrograms per day. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for pregnancy is 2.6 micrograms. Thus, even women whose dietary vitamin [B.sub.12] intake met recommendations could still have low blood vitamin [B.sub.12] levels. These results suggest that the RDA for vitamin [B.sub.12] in pregnancy is too low. Pregnant women should be aware of good sources of vitamin [B.sub.12]. Good sources include foods fortified with vitamin [B.sub.12] like fortified soymilk (0.8-3.2 micrograms per cup), fortified breakfast cereals (0.6-6 micrograms per ounce), and Vegetarian Support Formula nutritional yeast (1.5 micrograms in 1 Tablespoon mini-flakes). Commercial Interior Designers
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY COMMERCIAL interior design firms operating in Los Angeles County reported significant growth for 2006. This is the third consecutive year of growth for the industry. Local billings grew to $140 million, up $13 million or 11 percent, from the previous year. The numbers of projects have increased in both size and scope as projects in the pipeline move into the building phase. Numerous firms are working on projects valued at $100 million or greater. No. 7 Leo A Daly began work on the 500,000-square-foot renovation of the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport. The $723 million project calls for renovation of the facility and construction of inline baggage screening facilities.
By expanding to almost 7,500 square feet, we have increased our inventory of furniture and decor items, and our warehouse space, said Lina Quintero, Elements of Design owner and lead designer. We offer a significant trade discount to interior designers, who love to shop here for truly unique items, and having such a large showroom simplifies and accelerates the design timeline because appropriate materials are immediately accessible to our in-house design staff. In support of their environmentally friendly practices, the entrance to the new space is a set of reclaimed European double-doors. The hand-painted minute details on the nine-foot-tall doors are extraordinary; lending a unique charm and beauty to the showroom. The doors were recently rescued from a 100-year-old apartment in Paris, France, and brought to the United States. Quintero stated, Reclaimed materials and antiques are the ultimate green recycling opportunity because they bypass the need for manufacturing new materials. Just inside the doors, visitors are greeted with a creative display of sophisticated eco chic products and materials, including wall and floor coverings, paint, surface materials and upholstery fabric.

permanent hair removal
Hair RemoverHair removers, or depilatories, are products designed to chemically or physically remove undesirable hair from areas on the body. Hair removers are made by mixing together the appropriate raw materials in large stainless steel tanks and then filling them into individual packages. In use for thousands of years, they continue to be an important part of many peoples everyday hygiene. Currently, new hair removers are being investigated which are less irritating, more effective, and longer lasting.Epilatories were the first type of hair removers. The most common of these products is an epilating wax. This product is heated and spread on the skin in the desired area. It is then allowed to cool and harden. The mass of wax is then rapidly removed, pulling with it about 80% of the hairs. It is a slightly painful procedure and a mild anti-+ septic is typically applied to protect against skin irritation. Epilatories have not been widely used by individual consumers, how-ever they are popular in beauty salons.
Unwanted facial hair is a common condition that often goes untreated. Women most often seek treatment, but men may also have concerns about this problem. (1) In most cases, a severe underlying medical condition is not the cause of unwanted facial hair. Its presence, however, causes significant psychologic stress and may lead patients to resort to uncomfortable and often expensive means of removal. During the anagen phase, mitotic activity in the hair bulb and dermal papilla resumes and forms the new hair shaft, pushing out the old inactive hair, or club hair, as the new hair advances. The matrix cells, which form the new hair, multiply rapidly and ascend into the follicular canal, dehydrate, and form the growing shaft. The visible hair shaft is composed of an outer cuticle, the cortex and, sometimes, a core of compact, keratinized cells, all of which are made of protein. (2-5)

Meal and snack replacement products helped participants in a German study lose weight-and keep it off. Losing a small percentage of body weight can make a big difference in reducing an obese persons risk of developing cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Yet maintaining weight loss over the long term can be a problem. A German study published in the August 2000 issue of Obesity Research reports that using one meal and one snack replacement product a day can help those whove lost weight keep it off.
For obese people, maintaining weight loss is often more difficult than the initial weight reduction effort. Typically, only half of all people who successfully lose at least 5 kg will maintain that weight loss for one year, and only about one in 10 will maintain it for five years. At the end of the one-year weight maintenance program, the ad lib, low fat group had maintained 13.2 kg of their initial weight loss of 13.5 kg, and the fixed energy intake group had maintained 9.7 kg of their initial 13.8 kg weight loss. At follow-up, regained weight was greater in the fixed energy intake group than in the ad lib, low fat group. At this time, 65% of the ad lib group and 40% of the fixed energy group had maintained a weight loss of more than 5 kg. These data indicate that an ad lib, low fat, high carbohydrate diet is superior to a fixed energy intake diet in maintaining a substantial weight loss. The mechanism by which the ad lib, low fat diet prevents relapse may be both by reducing energy intake and by increasing energy expenditure, although the effect on appetite seems to be more important.
When goals are not reached or the progress toward them is unsatisfactory, people have impaired performance and often tend to abandon their attempt to achieve the unreachable goals. To improve the understanding of the weight loss expectations of obese subjects and of the factors that influence them, some Italian researchers analyzed the data of a large observational study that was recently established in Italy for a comprehensive measurement of health-related quality of life, psychological distress, and eating behavior in obese patients. A total of 1891 obese patients seeking treatment in 25 Italian medical centers were included in this study. Diet and weight history, weight loss expectations and primary motivation for seeking treatment (health or improved appearance) were recorded via a detailed case report and a set of questionnaires. Psychiatric distress, binge eating, and body image dissatisfaction were tested by self-administered questionnaires (Symptom CheckList-90, Binge Eating Scale and Body Uneasiness Test). In 1011 cases, the one-year expected BMI loss was gt; 9kg/[m.sup.2], dream BMI was 26 and maximum acceptable BMI was 29.3. The expected one-year BMI loss was significantly related to the maximum BMI loss during previous attempts. Age was also a strong predictor of weight goals. Psychiatric distress, body dissatisfaction and binge eating did not predict weight loss expectations. The primary motivation for weight loss was concern for future (33.4%) or present health (gt;50%), and only 15.2% wanted to improve appearance. Women seeking treatment to improve appearance had a lower grade of obesity, were younger and had first attempted weight loss at a younger age.

“Weve seen phenomenal growth both in the adoption of technology by traditional real estate firms and in the formation of real estate focused dot coms,” says Dale Anne Reiss, global leader of the real estate arm of Ernst Young. “Literally hundreds of firms (are) now operating and more (are) arriving every day.” These thoughts were echoed by Joe Rubin, National Director of Real Estate eBusiness Solutions. “Traditional real estate companies are finally embracing technology because they see that the Internet has now delivered the tools for online service providers to deliver business processes faster, cheaper and more efficiently.” According to Reiss, start-up activity has been particularly intense in the capital and transactions sectors.” While the transaction sector is in its relative infancy, more than two dozen sites have quickly emerged through which commercial real estate properties can be acquired and sold online,” says Reiss. “And there are more that 30 sites where commercial properties can be leased or marketed online. The digital economy is changing so quickly that companies. need to be able to think on their feet, and reap opportunity whenever and wherever it comes.”
If I wrote a bible of taxation, the first commandment would be, thou shalt not put real estate into a corporation. Someday, when you try to get the real estate (invariably, depreciated down to a low tax basis and appreciated in value) out of the corporation, you will run into a double tax. The first tax will hit the corporation when the real estate is sold (or transferred to the stockholders). The problem is that the sales proceeds are stuck inside the corporation, and you can only get at those proceeds via a dividend or a corporate liquidation. Both are subject to a second tax. A transfer of the property to the stockholders also triggers a double tax. So whats the answer? Imagine a business owner, Joe, who is married to Mary. Joe should put the title in his name at the time the real estate is purchased. Here are some of the tax goodies that may come Joes way over time:

hydroponic kits
Ultimate Goods of Rollingbay, Wash., introduces Frog Pants gardening gloves for working in wet environments. The gloves feature a long sleeve that reaches up past the elbow to keep arms, hands and clothing dry. The gloves are useful for hydroponic gardening and a wide range of agricultural and ranching chores.
Hydroponics comes from the Latin words hydro, which means water, and ponos, which means to work. The idea behind hydroponics is that if you can provide a inert soil-less substrate, such as rockwool or perlite, and feed it with a high quality hydroponic nutrient and water solution, either timed or constantly, your plants will grow faster and produce more fruit. How? Your plants roots are not required to expend lots of energy on a massive root system to find food, and the air to water ratios in the soil-less media are much higher, which plants like. There are severed different ways to garden hydroponically, but the common denominators between the methods are the water, the hydroponic nutrient, and the soil-less substrate. Generally, you will choose a method that matches the type of crop you are growing. For instance NFT, or nutrient film technique, would be used for smaller crops, and a top drip system would be used on larger crops. If all of this sounds Greek to you perhaps you should try the simplest and perhaps most high performance method, water culture. Water culture is as simple as putting an aquarium bubble stone attached to an air pump in a tray of nutrient rich water. Just add your plants in the tray and watch them explode. The novice hydroponic gardener must also be made aware of the pH of the water and the amount of nutrients present in the water. To test pH, you can get a digital meter for about $50, or you can get litmus paper or a dropper kit like the ones used for pools. Generally, plants like the pH to be between 6 and 7, however some plants like it lower or higher, so find out what your plants need. Measuring the amount of nutrients in the water takes a meter that you can get for about $100 (cheaper meters are much lower quality). This meter will measure the TDS, or total dissolved solution in the water. These meters cannot tell which elements are actually present, rather they measure all of them combined. The amount of total dissolved solution needed will vary depending on crop. Lettuce, for instance, likes a 400-600 ppm range while tomatoes will need 2200-2600 ppm.

Before Sundays run-off election, one of the Polish bishops burst out that Poland would make itself scandalous and the laughing-stock of the world if this intensely Catholic country elected an ex-Communist “enemy of the Church” as president. But it is always unwise to lecture Poles from on high. They went and elected Aleksander Kwasniewski, junior minister in the last Polish Communist government within the Soviet empire, as head of state of the nation whose crest is a white eagle wearing the crown of the Madonna, Queen of Poland. And the world is not laughing. For some Poles, this result must seem a catastrophe. It is not just that the post-Communists, who already dominate the government, now hold the presidency as well. Neither is it only the fear (groundless, on the evidence so far) that they will steer Poland back into some subordinate relationship with Russia. It is, rather, that the nation will be divided and polarised. In one camp will be the great pro-Western forces of traditional Catholic patriotism of which - in spite of countless quarrels and disillusions - Lech Walesa was a member. These forces will now be voiceless, or at least without any foothold in authority. Triumphant in the other camp will be godless modernisers and Marxists, placemen from the old Communist bureaucracy and traitors secretly in league with a reviving Russian Empire. But this is not how the real split ran. Workers and small peasants voted about equally for Kwasniewski and Walesa in the fi
